Nurturing a life-long love of learning

Devon Foundation Stage

Welcome to Devon Class!

Well, I cannot believe the children have only just started school, they have settled so quickly and they are developing their understanding of the routines in class already. What an amazing start!

The Reception Year is a continuation of the curriculum the children followed at their previous nursery or childcare setting. We will be supporting your child's individual development through carefully planned play based activities. Our main area of focus this term will be Personal, Social and Emotional Development. We will have the overall theme 'Marvellous Me' but our activities will primarily encourage children to achieve 'next steps' in their learning and may relate to the children's own interests. Below is a brief overview of the activities we are aiming to learn about this term.

Personal, Social and emotional development-   Settling in to school, developing relationships with others, confident to try new activities, persevering with activities we find tricky.

Physical development- Increasing our balance, coordination and fine motor skills through a variety of activities.

Communication and Language- Developing our understanding of vocabulary and sentence structure through role play, games, stories and play with others.

Mathematics- We will be practising counting accurately and recognising numbers.

Literacy- Initially, we will be focussing on distinguishing sounds,  understanding rhyme and blending sounds orally before moving on to letter recognition. We will use the Jolly Phonics songs and images to support our learning.

Understanding of the world During the term, we will learn about humans and will explore the world around us, including looking for signs of autumn. On Wednesdays, we will begin to use the laptops and Ipads.

Creative development- We will explore joining materials and mixing colours in the creative area. In music, we will explore the sounds we can make with instruments and we shall develop our imagination though a variety of activities including role play, construction and small world.

Our PE lessons will take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure your child has a named kit in school. Indoor kit- black shorts, white t-shirt, plimsolls. Outdoor kit- Black jogging bottoms and tracksuit top, trainers. Some lessons will be inside, some will be outside. Please also ensure that your child's uniform and shoes are named to ensure we can return items to their rightful owner if any are misplaced!

Muddy Friday- We will be taking part in a variety of muddy activities on Friday afternoons. Please send your child to school in clothes you don't mind getting muddy for the day (not uniform). We ask that you send your child with a bag containing named waterproofs and wellies. You may leave these in school or bring them each week.

We look forward to working closely with you and hearing all about your child's achievements at home.

Kind regards,

Devon Class Team
