Physical Education at St Peters Cross Keys C of E Academy

We believe that Physical Education (PE) plays a vital role in the holistic development of every child. Our PE curriculum is designed to nurture a love of sport and physical activity, inspiring all children to flourish and grow in confidence, resilience, and skill. Rooted in our vision of love, hope, and community, our approach to PE supports children in becoming healthy, active, and successful members of society.

Our PE Curriculum Intent

Our PE curriculum aims to inspire every child to be active and determined to learn new skills while building on prior knowledge. We provide a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where children can succeed in a wide range of physical activities. Reflecting our core values of Community, Hope, Wisdom, Peace, Dignity, and Joy, we encourage children to:

  • Develop teamwork, leadership, and social skills.
  • Embrace fair play and healthy competition, whether competing against themselves or others.
  • Build confidence in physical activity regardless of their starting ability or physical needs.
  • Understand the importance of physical health and emotional wellbeing.

We integrate PE with our Science and PSHE lessons to teach children about the vital role of physical activity and nutrition in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, promoting lifelong habits that support both body and mind.

How We Implement PE

Our curriculum has been designed to ensure that there is a clear, progressive development of skills and knowledge from year to year. Children participate in two PE lessons weekly, exploring a wide variety of activities including:

  • Athletics
  • Ball skills
  • Dance
  • Fitness and fundamentals
  • Gymnastics
  • Invasion games
  • Net and wall games
  • Striking and fielding

In Key Stage 2, children receive swimming lessons led by qualified instructors, focusing on developing confidence, competence, and proficiency to swim at least 25 metres. We also offer a range of after-school sports clubs to enrich the curriculum and provide additional opportunities for children to develop their skills, build friendships, and enjoy physical activity beyond the school day.

To ensure accessibility and inclusivity, we adapt equipment and teaching approaches to meet the needs of all children, including those with SEND and physical impairments. This ensures every child can experience success, build resilience, and feel valued within our school community.
