Forest School at St Peters Cross Keys C of E Academy

At St Peters Cross Keys C of E Academy, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Our Forest School programme offers children a unique and enriching educational experience set in the natural beauty of our local woodlands and outdoor environments. As a maintained primary school rooted in our values of Community, Hope, Wisdom, Peace, Dignity, and Joy, Forest School is a vital part of how we nurture confident, motivated, and well-rounded children who flourish and grow.

    What is Forest School?

Forest School is a specialised learning process that supports children in developing confidence, self-esteem, and practical skills through hands-on activities in an outdoor setting. This approach has been shown to enhance social and communication skills, foster independence, and improve academic outcomes by building a strong foundation of personal and social development.

At St Peters Cross Keys, our children engage in Forest School sessions throughout the year, embracing all weather conditions with appropriate clothing and footwear. These sessions encourage children to explore, create, and problem-solve while learning about the natural world and their place within it.

    What Happens During Forest School?

Our Forest School programme consists of six weekly sessions, each lasting up to two hours. Led by our trained staff and Forest School practitioners, Mr Rhodes-Yeomans and Mrs Simpson , the sessions progressively empower children to take the lead in their learning, encouraging curiosity and independence.

    Activities include:

    • Building shelters using natural materials
    • Creating natural art and crafts
    • Learning knots and lashings
    • Fire lighting (safely supervised)
    • Tracking animals and bug hunts
    • Investigating trees and plants
    • Climbing, balancing, and team games
    • Woodwork using tools
    • Making bug homes and bird feeders
    • Collecting, sorting, and identifying natural materials

These hands-on experiences develop a wide range of skills, including physical coordination, problem-solving, risk management, communication, and environmental awareness.
